Prone to metaphysical and scientific speculation, the author often sits on a high peak from which humanity seems like a nest of ants. In the story "Crime and Punishment," Yoel Carmi wins a fortune, then discovers that he might not live another week. In "The Shatterer," the protagonist is appointed Commissioner of the office for the Demolition of Myths. By day, myth after myth is destroyed. But he rescues from the rubble whatever appeals to him and at night secretly constructs a new mythology of his own.

About the Book

"He is an arch-joker, who controls the strings and makes the puppets dance on the frustrating...stage of the universe," wrote the critic Avraham Huss.
