What Does Grandpa Say?

Nira Harel
AGE: 2-4

This charming variation on the well-known game of “What does a dog say?” offers heart-warming insight into the special relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. With considerable humor, Nira Harel puts us in the shoes of little Michael when Grandpa tries to teach him what various animals say. After painstakingly working his way through a list of animals and demonstrating the sounds they make, Grandpa turns to his little grandson and asks, “Who says, hee-haw?” Michael triumphantly replies, “Grandpa!” “What, am I a donkey?” Grandpa laughs and asks, “Who says cock-a-doodle-doo?” “Grandpa, Grandpa,” declares Michael. “What, am I a rooster?” asks Grandpa gleefully. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that little Michael just may have missed the point, but the main thing is that he and Grandpa are having a wonderful time. The book ends with ever-patient Grandpa starting all over again, “So, my sweet, let’s start anew, tell me - what does a fly say?”
