Arieh Eckstein (1929-2015) was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, and spent his childhood in Lodz, Poland. He spent World War II in the Lodz Ghetto in a Janusz Korczak's orphanage before being deported. He immigrated to Israel after the war and lived in Rosh Pina, a town in the Galilee, where he worked as a painter and sculptor.
