In The Mask Maker, the realistic blends with the supernatural, and great liberties are taken with mythological and biblical stories. In one story the biblical Joseph is revealed to be a girl, disguised by Rachel so as not to disappoint Jacob. In another, a baby is raised in a Jerusalem monastery during the plague. Genders and masks are switched when women must disguise themselves to achieve self-realization.
The stories contain many descriptions brimming with freshness, precision, enlightenment, and poetic potency.
