A Special Case Named Freud and 3 more Plays

An intriguing cycle of plays about various aspects of Freud’s life.​ A Special Case Named Freud deals with the relationship between Freud and Anton Sauerwald, a Nazi chemist who in March 1938, after the Anschluss of Austria into the German Reich, was appointed trustee of Freud’s property. Sauerwald found out that Freud had a secret account in a Swiss bank, yet he signed the certificate that enabled Freud and his family to leave Vienna safely for London.

Freud’s Women takes place in London in 1940, and dramatizes Freud’s relationships with the three women closest to him: his wife, his sisterin- law and his daughter. Much of the play is told in flashback, as Freud’s widow Martha and her sister Minna recall their lives with him in Vienna. Old jealousies arise and wounds open when Martha learns that her husband probably had a love affair with her sister and controversial relations with his daughter Anna.

Dear Sigmund and Carl is an imaginary portrayal of the historic meeting between Freud’s and Jung’s sons in London in February 1970. During this meeting they signed a contract, agreeing to publish the correspondence between their fathers. Spielrein is based on the relationship between Sabina Spielrein, one of the first female psychoanalysts, Carl Gustav Jung and Sigmund Freud.
