Anti

Dror Antilovich is a rapper nicknamed Anti. He’s a rebellious 14-year-old and he’s going through a crisis. The uncle he loved committed suicide following a long period of depression and Dror’s father reacted by closing himself off from everyone. Dror becomes aggressive towards his teachers and parents and neglects his studies. He feels that no one understands him and finds comfort in listening to hip-hop music. One day, at a music store, he meets Arad and Lisa, the founders of the rap group “Rapture.” They bring him into their group, made up of teenagers who live and breathe rap. Becoming part of the group helps Dror escape his worries, and he stands out as a talented rapper.

He also falls in love with Lisa. But all is not well: Arad, the charismatic leader, forces the group to obey him blindly and to shoplift. Dror decides to rebel: he does battle-raps with some of the other group members and eventually leaves the group with Lisa. The two start a new group and prepare for the national rap contest. We read what happens at the contest with bated breath and the results are very surprising. Anti is a quick and angry, heated and touching book for young adults. It is written in the rhythm of rap and is narrated in Dror’s unique, very honest voice. This is a story about lack of communication, about searching for one’s identity and restoring one’s self-image. Rap music saves Dror – it helps him to communicate with the people around him, teaches him to love and inspires him to make his way as a young artist.
