Calling the Bats

Bat-Shahar`s lyrical, gentle stories all revolve around women who have a strong sense of life passing them by. They live in sterile, middle class, religious homes that are frozen by prohibition, but they are exposed to beauty and sensuality that has no chance of fulfilment.

The world drawn by Bat-Shahar is ripe with eroticism. In most of the stories there is a hint of a strong, guilt-ridden oedipal connection between the women and their fathers, the father figure being an obstacle blocking the way to a full experience of sensuality.
