First Morning in Paradise
A single woman in her late 30s addresses an interior monologue to her unborn baby. The heroine’s eloquence, wit and sardonic humor make for an entertaining yet sometimes shocking impact, affording glimpses into various spheres of Israeli life; Tel Aviv bohemians and celebrities; childhood in a small immigrant town in the 1960s; the unhappy experience of a girl soldier in the fabled Israeli Army. Thanks to the author’s unfailing eye and startling audacity, they all have an intense feel of reality about them. The story seemingly flows along the unstructured, illogical lines of free association, yet finally emerges as a true journey of development and accretion, leading through a via dolorosa of self-discovery to the real and metaphorical birth.
