Matti’s Orange Revolution

Matti can`t read or write even though she`s already in third grade. If she doesn`t learn soon, she`ll have to go down a grade and be separated from her best friend. Matti`s Grandma also has a hard time reading – but with her, it`s because she doesn`t see as well as she used to. Matti offers to read the papers out loud to her… but hopes Grandma will forget. One day, Matti is sitting with Uncle Joel while he peels an orange. He tells her about the gas that escapes from oranges when you peel them and Matti has an idea: why not make fuel from orange peel? That would make less pollution, and there are lots of oranges in Israel! Uncle Joel suggests Matti write a letter to the Prime Minister and tell him about her idea. And this finally gets her to write. With a little help and lots of motivation, Matti learns to read and write – and hopes she`ll start an ecological revolution.
