The German Unit

Young Ernst arrived in Palestine after escaping from Germany during World War II . He joins the newly created “German Unit,” a commando group trained by the British to disguise themselves as German soldiers. Their mission: to sabotage the German army from the inside. Ernst is sent to spy on German POWs being held by the British army in Egypt. He is to play his role at a prison near Alexandria, knowing that other spies in the same prison have been discovered and killed by the inmates. Only the prison commander knows his real identity. Ernst plays his part so well that he is selected by the British guards for especially rough treatment. Eventually, he must reveal who he is in order to prevent the guards’ violence. While still stationed in Egypt, the Allied Forces defeat Rommel and Ernst is recalled to Palestine.

Orgad has brought to life one of the more daring and bizarre stories of the war.
