The Wonder Seed

What lies hidden in the little brown seeds of an apple core? Netta discovers that each seed contains a complete apple tree – indeed a marvel, a miracle of growth.
Grandpa told Netta: “Inside each tiny apple seed is hidden a big apple tree. All you’ve got to do is bury the seed in the ground, water it and take care of it. Don’t forget to say the blessing ‘May you grow!'”.

Next day, Netta planted the seed, but nothing happened. Perhaps my seed is thirsty? thought Netta, and hurried to water the earth. Perhaps it’s cold? she thought, and covered the little mound with a blanket of dry leaves. Netta waited a long long time until her eyes closed. Suddenly she heard something rustle: a tiny pale leaf peeked up from the ground and rose quickly. Within seconds, a tall tree had grown. White flowers budded and were instantly replaced by tiny red balls that grew and grew. “Hello my apple tree,” Netta called out with joy. “Hello Netta,” the tree’s leaves rustled happily.

Her friends dismissed Netta’s words but Netta already knew that Grandpa Baruch was right. After all, she herself had awakened the apple tree that had been asleep inside the wonder seed.
