When Saul Got Lost

This charming book is a blend of realism and fantasy. It is a story of tension between a child and his mother and a terrifying encounter with a witch, ending in reconciliation and love. Saul takes a walk in the city with his mother. He asks her to buy him a helmet – the kind bikers wear as they fly across town on their deafening motorcycles. But Saul`s mother refuses, and he is upset. Suddenly, the sky turns black, and a storm breaks. Saul loses his mother, and sees a wonderful winged horse, with a horn coming out of his forehead. Saul mounts the horse, flying with him to a wonderland filled with incredible creatures. He travels to different places, until he notices a house. A woman is looking out the window. She calls out to him, asking him to come stay with her. When Saul enters the house, he discovers that the woman is, in fact, a frightening witch, preparing a sour soup. She tries to feed him the soup, but Saul splatters it at her. That instant, she becomes small and harmless. Saul wears the helmet he so wanted, which miraculously turns up in the witch`s house; the minute he puts it on he becomes big and strong. He suddenly finds himself back in the city, and meets his mother. “How grown-up you`ve become,” says his mother, and hugs him.
