Winged Secret

A shared secret leads to friendship between Eyal, a popular boy, and Bar, an ostracized loner, who both live in a village not far from Haifa. One day, Eyal’s grandfather, tells him that his neighbor, Gavri, is going to have an operation and needs someone to take care of his carrier pigeons. Eyal accepts and a fascinating new world opens up. Bar, who loves animals, finds out and asks if she can help too. At first Eyal is reluctant, but then he gets to know her and he changes his mind. The two of them look after the birds devotedly and even adopt a fledgling they call Hemi. Together they learn about the responsibility of caring for animals. They deal with Bar’s social problems, and when Gavri dies, they experience the pain of loss. At the same time, they discover the rich history of raising carrier pigeons in Israel and throughout the world. Most of all, they discover that carrier pigeons are still valuable even in the Internet age, and getting a letter from the sky still has a special magic.
