Tal Nitzan
טל ניצן
Tal Nitzan, a poet, novelist, editor and a major translator of Hispanic literature, was born in Jaffa, Israel, and has lived in Argentina, Colombia, and U.S.A (New York). She currently lives in Tel Aviv. She studied art history and Hispanic studies, and majored in literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Nitzan has published seven poetry collections and six children’s books, and has edited an anthology of Hebrew protest poetry. She has translated numerous books into Hebrew, mainly from Spanish, and was editor of two series, for Hispanic literature and for contemporary Hebrew fiction, as well as the literary magazine Orot. Currently she is a founding editor of the National Library’s online magazine The Garage.
Among her awards: the Rosario Castellanos Prize (1985), the Ministry of Culture Prize for Translation, twice (1995; 2005), the WIZO Award for Women Writers (1998), the Ministry of Culture Prize for Debut Poetry (2002), the Tchernichovsky Prize for Exemplary Translation (2012), an honorary medal from the President of Chile for her translation of Pablo Neruda’s poetry (2004), the ACUM (2007) and Bernstein (2008) Poetry prizes, the Prime Minister’s Prize for writers (2010), the Hebrew University (2013) and the Bar Ilan University (2019) Poetry Prizes Her poems have been translated into over 20 languages and thirteen selections of her poetry were published in translation. Nitzan has published two novels: ‘Each and every Child’ (2015) and ‘The last Passenger’ (2020).
